How to be productive (even when you don’t feel like it!)

One of the common traits of successful people is that they get shiz done….  They are productive and effective constantly, because they know how to consistently get things done even when they don’t feel like it.

Do you know your ‘why’? “Do what you love” people say… but it is only half the story.  It’s not only what we do that keeps us fulfilled and motivated, it is also why we do it.  Connecting your business to your sense of purpose helps you stay motivated.

But even being lucky enough to follow our passion, we can still have those days when we know there is stuff to do, but we just can’t seem to get motivated to get in the zone.  It happens to all of us.  Some days we need to override those feelings and we have some top tips on how to do this.

Be ready to step up your productivity!

Schedule it!

Everything must be in your schedule. If you don’t have a plan, or an approach, you will miss the stuff you don’t feel like doing.  If it’s in your calendar and properly planned out then you will get it done.  We naturally avoid things we don’t feel like doing in the moment. Put it in your calendar and commit to it.  Break it down, stop putting things off or it will feel harder in the long run.

Be prepared for resistance!

Plan for the resistance.  Every decision we make we experience opposition in our head.  If we know what this is likely to be, we can have an argument ready to counteract the negative decision.  Don’t feel like editing.  (I will do it tomorrow.)  The counteract is you know you will feel amazing when it’s done, and you will resent yourself for not doing it.  You are not the voice in your head!  Have an alternative script to be strong and ready to overcome the avoidant feeling.

Focus on the outcome

Remember how you felt when you last achieved the same goal.  A classic example is exercise.  You always feel better after doing it and never regret it.  By building a positive memory you can focus on the feeling you will get after doing it!  Journaling is an effective tool for this.  In the planner, we recommend writing down and tracking your ‘big wins’ for this very reason.  Remind yourself of that positive feeling!

Having an accountability partner is one of the best ways to get things done.  Knowing you have to report back or share the progress with someone else is a very effective motivator.  We have recently had a business coach to help with launching the PHOX Planner, and checking in with her every few weeks has been a very powerful way of keeping us on track.

If there are tasks that you never want to do, then maybe you could consider outsourcing them.  For example, if updating your website is just not for you and fills you with dread every time, then maybe it is time to acknowledge this and focus on other tasks.  If it’s more than something you just don’t feel like doing occasionally, then it is worth acknowledging that maybe it’s not for you.

Be glad of the opportunity

Remember how you felt before, when you were stuck in a job and would have done anything for the opportunity to be running your own business?  Yes, that!  Being grateful for the experience you now have is a brilliant reminder that even if you don’t always feel like doing a task, gratitude can see you through.

And if all else fails, give yourself a reward!  We have the perfect treat for you – the PHOX Planner!  It is beautifully designed to encourage daily and weekly use to build habits for success, and keep you motivated.  Even when you don’t feel like it 😉
